It's How You Cope
Life has its measure of setbacks
Some are small, some are larger in size.
There are portions of every existence
Which clearly we'd like to revise.
But stresses and problems are normal
Disappointments are part of the game.
If we let these moments control us,
We must assume part of the blame.
It's how we react that's important
We mustn't distort what we feel.
Let's work with what life has to offer
And never begrudge a bad deal.
Depression can never assist us
In weathering woes on this earth.
We shouldn't let each disappointment
Give rise to more grief than it's worth.
Instead we should try to discover,
As life in intensity mounts,
A way to place things in proportion.
You see, how we cope is what counts.

Topics such as Depression, Suicide, Addiction, and Self Injury have always been a part of my life. However, I never realized that they would play such a huge role in my career choice. A fellow nurse had given me this poem to read our patients after witnessing a suicide attempt. Reading it brought tears to my eyes and had a profound affect on the patients as well. This is one in a series of events that has compelled me to become involved.
I decided to become involved with Hope Shines in March after meeting Darienne and hearing her story. Her story and the stories of the other team members are inspirational. It came to my realization that being involved and contributing to a cause that will help those with mental illness has multiple benefits including personal. I am so lucky to have met amazing and inspiring people.
Our team can use many more volunteers. Even a minute contribution can help us continue toward our goal. So we are asking people to please get involved, come out to our meetings and events, and support this great cause. Help us “Break the Silence”.
